| After School Program, Middle School and High School 2009-10 |
| Routines The After School program takes place, generally, three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The exceptions are those nights for seminars with parents, or on half days dedicated to professional development. Each week students will receive a schedule outlining which tutor they will meet with, and where that tutor is located. This is provided by the after school coordinator. In both middle and high school, the program begins at 4:15.Students are given 15 minutes to use the restroom, get water, go to their lockers, meet with teachers, etc. If they do not need this time for the previously mentioned reasons, they can go directly to their assigned tutoring rooms. Once they have arrived at their tutoring locations, attendance is taken, and students receive a snack. Snack concludes at 4:20; between 4:20-4:40, tutors will provide targeted instruction in either Math, or ELA subject areas. From 4:40-5:30, students can continue working on the specific day’s lesson they received, or begin homework in the targeted subject area.
Specific to middle school groups, the tutor is responsible for checking the students’ homework planner, monitoring their progress, and providing assistance. In some cases, students will receive a form to fill out indicating their progress on work for the designated subjects. This form will be used in the event that the student has made satisfactory progress on an assignment, but still has additional homework within the subject. This form is used to indicate a student’s mastery, their remaining questions, and to avoid over-burdening students who already will be extending their school day. At the conclusion of the session, tutors again check the progress of students, and dismiss them from school. Should students need additional support, either to complete assignments, or to receive additional support in the subject area, tutors will bring this group to a designated location where they will receive supervision from 5:30-6:00pm. At this point, all students in the after school program will be dismissed by tutors.
With regard to the high school program, the tutor greets students, takes attendance, and gives students snack. At 4:20 in the ELA based group, the tutor will determine if the focus will be reading fluency and preparing for future read alouds, or writing skills based around the SIM program. The math tutor determines the level of the students and decides which skill-based areas to address. No time is designated for the math program as this takes place both before and after school, depending on the day. Students will be given a set schedule of when they receive this additional support when it comes to the math group. |

Who Attends? In Middle and High School, there are 2 groups of students: those who are asked to come and those who choose to come. The students who are asked to come are targeted because of 1 or more of the following reasons: promotion in doubt students from last year, summer school students from last summer, students who are reading 2 grade levels below grade level, or teacher recommendation. Initially students who are recommended for the program will receive a letter indicating the strong suggestion that they attend. Families who are interested in having their students attend the program, but who fall outside of the recommended area, area asked to call and speak with the after school coordinator so a letter can be prepared for them, inviting them to join. |
What do students do in afterschool?Within the middle school, students are able to work with teachers in ELA and Math subject areas. Although most students consistently meet with one specific teacher in a group of approximately 8-12 students, some students will alternate subjects based on their needs. They will receive targeted instruction in the given subject area, as well as time to begin homework related to that subject.
Within the High School program, the program is tailored to helping struggling students improve their reading fluency, writing skills, and math skills. Students are taught to prepare read-aloud programs each week in preparation for working with elementary students. This empowerment is more age-appropriate to high school students, and in keeping with our belief of helping students to become leaders in their academics. Students are also given instruction to improve upon their writing skills using the SIM program. The focus for math instruction is to help students emerge on grade level and to prepare them for the math regents. |
When is it?Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 4:10-5:30. Students who require additional support, or at the request of their families can receive additional supervised support from 5:30-6:00pm. This support is provided by a “skeleton crew” of tutors who are also working the program from 4:00-5:30.
High School students receive help additionally during the zero period before school, but their after school days coincide with those of the middle school. |
Where is it?Classrooms on the 4th floor only. |
Is there transportation? No. There is no bus, so parents must make alternative arrangements for their children if they want them to attend after school. |
How will we keep track of student attendance?Teachers will be given attendance sheets to take attendance in their classes daily. Ms. Weidling will come around each day to collect attendance. |
Can students leave after school to go to the store and then come back at 4:15? No. We have found that this is a safety issues and also interferes with learning time. Students must stay in the building between 4:00 and 4:15. Students may bring their own healthy snack, or take advantage of the snack provided by the school. |
What happens if a student is in after school tutoring and an interfering activity like music or sports? We do not have a set policy about this and will rely on principles. Each child must be looked at individually to decide what is best for that child. Sometimes, mandating that a child go to academic help is what the child needs, and sometimes the child will attend their sports or music activities. It is the goal of the after school program to help keep students on track academically, while not punishing them or preventing their participation in other extracurricular activities. Coordination and communication between with the music and sports programs and the after school program is constant to ensure that students are excelling academically while still enjoying these other pursuits. |
How will we keep track of faculty?Faculty will sign in on an after school sign in sheet in the main office. |
What happens when a faculty member is absent? Directors will send out emails to the staff when someone is absent. Tutors are asked to arrange coverage for their tutoring groups, however if this is not possible the after school coordinator will arrange coverage of the tutoring group in question. |
Are we partnering with outside organizations? Yes, we partner with Graham Windham for clubs. |
 | Will we have after school on half days? No. |
Will we have after school on Parent Discovery Nights? On Thursday evenings when the monthly Parent Discovery meetings are held, there will no after school program. However, middle school students whose parents are part of Wednesday Night Parent Discovery Groups may remain at school on those nights so their parents can attend the parent meeting. The same will be applied for high school students whose parents attend Discovery Night on Thursdays. Students in middle school will join the FLC Child Care Program, which includes time for homework, dinner and other activities. Students in high school will receive supervision which will also be coordinated by the FLC. |
 | When does after-school program end? Mid-June. |
 | How will we access whether after school worked? Every 9 weeks students will be given examinations using the Accelerated Math program, or within the SIMS diagnostic program. These exams will not count towards or against students in their classes, but will be used to determine progress or the additional needs of the student. |
How much do teachers get compensated? Faculty are asked to work with students either from 4:00-5:30, or from 4:00-6:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. While we ask that teachers come for all 3 days, we can be flexible if they are only able to come for 1 or 2. Tutors involved with the program will be compensated $40/hour. Compensation is currently determined by level of certification, although it is the hope that eventually all those involved in tutoring students will be compensated at this rate. |
